Slow fashion has an image problem. It sounds like it involves linen smocks, a loom, and a lecture. It doesn't. It's just the opposite of buying things you won't wear — and it starts with what's already in your wardrobe.

Here are five habits. Pick one.

## 1. Wear what you own

The most sustainable garment is the one hanging in your wardrobe right now — keeping clothes in use longer is the [UN Environment Programme's](https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/five-ways-reduce-waste-fashion-industry) first recommendation too. Before buying anything, spend a fortnight deliberately reaching for the pieces you've been ignoring. Some will surprise you. Some will confirm they should go. Either way, you've learned something for free.

## 2. Count your wears

You can't improve what you don't measure. Keep a simple tally of what you wear and how often. Within a month you'll know your real favourites (usually not the ones you'd have guessed) and the pieces that are just furniture.

This is also the fastest way to get honest about [cost per wear](/blog/cost-per-wear/) — the number that turns "sustainable" from a vibe into a calculation.

## 3. Apply the 30 wears test

Before anything new comes in, ask: [will I wear this 30 times?](/blog/30-wears-rule/) It takes ten seconds and it stops the majority of regret purchases at the door. No guilt required, just a pause.

## 4. Repair before you replace

A loose button, a dropped hem, a worn heel — these are five-minute jobs or a cheap trip to the tailor, and each one adds another year of wears to something you already like. Learn to sew a button. It's the highest-return skill in fashion.

## 5. Buy less, choose better

When you do buy, buy the thing you'll still want in three years. Better fabric, classic cut, a colour you already wear. It'll cost more up front and [less per wear](/blog/quality-over-quantity/), and it won't need replacing next spring.

## What slow fashion isn't

It isn't a purity test. Buying one fast-fashion top a year doesn't undo the other 364 days of wearing what you own. The goal is a direction, not a certificate.

Start with habit one. It costs nothing, and it's where every good wardrobe begins.
